Rename Nectar – Get a Hundred Bucks at Amazon!
May 5th, 2009Due to some recent trademark issues with our name, Nectar, we’re having to undertake the task of renaming ourselves. Yes that’s right, come the end of May Nectar will no longer be well, Nectar. Needless to say we weren’t too thrilled when this news first reached our ears. However, after the initial disappointment we’ve become quite excited about the idea of including our community in the renaming process. Before I discuss how we’d like you to help, let me give a little background on why we chose the name Nectar in the first place.
To us, Nectar communicated a certain fresh, happy, and simplistic vibe that we wanted our tribe to associate with the Nectar brand. When people thought “Nectar” we wanted a broad smile to stretch across their faces as they pondered their beautiful, fresh, and charmingly simple website. In nature, Nectar is the lure that helps wayard insects find their floral treasures and we believed the analogy was quite appropriate for our websites. In some small way we feel we’ve been able to achieve this vision and we can’t express how awesome it’s been to hear people respond positively to what Nectar is all about. But for all the good vibes we’ve had with the name there have also been some real challenges.
For example, because the URL nectar.com and the twitter username “nectar” were taken we opted to combine it with an adjective – hence “tastynectar”. Many folks referred to us as Tasty Nectar rather than our intended name of Nectar. We ultimately scrapped tastynectar.com and moved to getnectar.com instead but all of this giration left us feeling just a bit uneasy about our branding strategy. Now that we are forced to make a change, we can’t help but think this is a blessing in disguise. Which brings us back to you.
Instead of going through this renaming process alone we’d like to invite you to join us for the ride. From now through May 15th, 2009 we’re taking your suggestions for our new name. That’s right, you (or people just like you) will be the deciding factor for our company’s future branding. Of course there’s more in it for you than just simple recognition; the creator of the chosen name will receive a $100 gift certificate to spend at Amazon.com. Yes this is hot, but it just proves how much we want to hear from you, so spread the word far and wide, release your inner creative genius, and submit your naming ideas now!
Looking forward to hearing from you. Much love.

I shave against the grain. I say to-MA-to. I’ve never worn a brown belt with black shoes, but I have been known to do my own thing from time to time. So, I’ll be submitting my recommendation through this channel, not that too elaborate Wufoo.com site. The first time it timed out by the way. Lamesauce.
Anyways, to the matter at hand. The first thing that popped in my mind was “mana”. As in, what people lived off of for 40 years, mana. Since mana.com is taken, maybe manr (2.0 webby spelling). What manner of website are you? Also… viscocity. Yeah, spelling on purpose. It communicates the fluidity… the smooth nature of setting up a site. AND… and and the “city” speaks to the communal nature, the world-wide community that have a website brings.

(i sent this earlier via the link above – not sure it got thru)
“buoy”
…i really dig all the potential visuals that could result – now the angle is NOT nautical – no stars & stripes & anchors & ropes & definitely no boys in sailor suits! – yikes – my thought was think more along the lines of the idea of being a guide, a marker, the line just before deep waters, etc – which is what you do for your clients – & i think the word itself visually has some real balance – the stem of the b in top left to the stem of the y in bottom right – just some thoughts…

ok i have a few suggestions. first, let me preempt this by saying that i love the nectar name, and also the reasoning behind the naming. i literally know nothing about computers/technology, but i DO like using my creative juices to lend a helping hand, plus i am very bored at work. so here ya go!
-Yahgle.com
(i think its for sale). reasons i dont like this are that it is obviously a blend of Yahoo and Google… but it IS pretty catchy!
-Simpleton.com
(i really liked this one because it seemed to go with the service you offer (simplifying people’s lives) and the sketch art on your main page (obviously i am not very computer literate, so please bear with me on my jargon haha), and my memory of the definition of the word from middle school was that of just a simple, straight forward person, but apparently it is actually “fool”… so that might not work haha)
-ThatsWhatISaid.com
(i just think its funny… AND its available…just sayin’)
-Conglomeration.com
(this also may be for sale). Again, i just kind of like the word itself, and i feel it lends itself well to be “dot commed” (which unfortunately is taken haha) and it might represent the combination of all you do, not to mention the combination of all of the talent that each of you offer.
Well, thats about it. I will keep thinking!

another idea: “TRANCE” – the letters of nectar rearranged – this is the only word from the bunch that had any possibility – the idea being that your work is so good, it will put your clients into a trance – ha – but could be fun – could be a cool visual for a while of the letters rearranging from “nectar” to “trance” – ok, i’m done – well for now

(if you need to ban me from comments, np – ha – just had a couple of other ideas)
playing the letters of nectar…
“CAR TEN”
“TEN CAR”
[ not sure what either of these mean, but could lead to some fun imagery ]
& there’s always “CRETAN” – ha – but unless you plan on moving to crete or unless some of you guys are from crete or unless you plan on marketing services to the island of crete, this may not be a good option – ha

Oh… how about this?
Dorp
It’s drop misspelled and sounds cool when you say it, and its 2.0 webby. Plus… you don’t have to change your logo.
